Importance of Sprouting for your Birds/Parrots
I learned very early on that having a bird is not a 1 size fits all seed mix.
It's not a "I feed healthy pellets and that is it" either. Having a bird is a constant head scratcher. So you think "high quality pellets and that's it, I'm good" wrong! "High quality seeds and I'm good" Also wrong.
Now you hear from renowned vets that pellets are a thing of the past while others swear buy them. "Seeds that are sitting in stores have gone stale and lost nutritional value". "Chop and Sprouts are a must" " Don't Sprout it's not worth it in case there are some bacterias trapped" . Some say no eggs, other say yes! and the list of contradiction goes on and on.
Like I always say to my customers, I research, read documents put out by avian vets, attended seminars, webinars, workshops. I am subscribed to anything Avian related and use the information I get from my avian vet. So I will give you my opinion and what works for me, and as always I encourage you to do your own research.
This is what I feed my birds: Chop every morning which includes lots of Vitamin C since that is the most common deficiency birds experience. Carrots, red & yellow Bell Peppers, spinach, kale, green beans, sweet potatoes, zucchini, summer squash, broccoli, cauliflower, butternut squash, okra, jalapeños, green peas, corn, strawberries, blueberries, apples, mango, papaya, etc and of course I rotate as I don't always have all of the ingredients.
I also add sprouts to the chop, which has become my ultimate joy. I buy everything organic or from a local farm that does not use pesticides and human grade and play around with mixes.
Sprouting for your birds is an easy way to get them to eat loads of antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and enzymes and trust me when I say no bird passes up sprouts. They LOVE sprouts.
I was fostering an ONLY sunflower eating conure for the past 14 years, needless to say converting him was been hard, blood, sweat and tears hard.... But I managed to get him to eat new things.
